Part of our scaffolding guide.
Separate three parts of the brief
Access describes how people reach the work and where they need a platform. Edge protection addresses exposed edges. Weather protection concerns the building and work while parts of the roof are open. They answer different questions, even when they form part of the same project.
We provide residential scaffolding, edge protection and shrink wrapping and weather protection. Tell us what your roofer is doing so we can discuss the relevant scope. Protection arrangements need to suit the actual work and site.
Take a useful set of roofline photos
- Show each side of the building from ground level.
- Include eaves, gables, changes in roof level and attached structures.
- Show the ground below, including decks, stairs and sloping areas.
- Photograph the driveway or approach for equipment and materials.
- Identify doors, paths and neighbouring areas that must remain accessible.
Use existing plans or safely taken ground-level photos. There is no need to climb onto the roof to prepare an enquiry. For slopes and retaining walls, add the details in our uneven-ground checklist.
Map the roofing sequence
Ask the roofer to identify the main stages: preparation, removal, repairs, new covering and finishing. Note whether work moves across the roof in stages or needs several areas accessible at once. Include gutter, fascia or painting work that may follow.
Discuss when the scaffold needs to be ready and when the last trade will finish with it. If the roof programme changes, contact us before changing the access arrangement or assuming dismantling can proceed.
Describe material movements and occupied areas
Tell us how the trades expect materials to arrive and where they need them. Include the location of skips, work vehicles and any proposed lifting activity. The responsible team needs to assess these requirements rather than relying on an ordinary access platform as a storage or loading area.
At an occupied home, identify the entrance people will use, parking needs and areas for children or pets to stay clear of the work. At a workplace, explain deliveries and public routes. These details help coordinate the project around the people nearby.
Questions to settle before work starts
- Which elevations and working positions are in the agreed layout?
- How will the roofers reach and leave the work?
- What protection arrangements are specified for the task?
- Who receives handover and briefs the trades on agreed use?
- Who should be contacted if the roof sequence or access needs change?
Our scaffold quote worksheet helps you compare the access scope and hire period. Include any follow-on trades in that comparison so the quote reflects the whole programme.
Your questions
Is roof-edge protection the same as scaffolding?
They serve different purposes. Tell us about both the access your roofer needs and the exposed edges so the protection and working arrangement can be discussed together.
What if repairs extend the roofing programme?
Let us know as soon as the programme changes. We can discuss continued access, the hire period and any changes needed to the agreed setup.
